Sparrow Project

The Sparrow Project is a cardiovascular disease and stroke education prevention program targeting at-risk African Americans through a workshop-based curriculum focusing on lifestyle change, with an emphasis on diet modification, exercise, and smoking cessation, which has been conducted through partnerships with local African American churches. It is the first multi-county, minority-based CVD/stroke intervention proposed for the south central region of N.C., a 13-county region with high rates of CVD and stroke.
The Sparrow Project, now in Phase II, was conceived by the South Central Partnership for Public Health and is administered by the Robeson County Health Department. The program was originally developed in 2006 in response to the limited health infrastructure and significant need in this partnership region. The project is funded by the Health and Wellness Trust Fund, however the partnership will oversee its completion and assist with publishing and disseminating results. Assessment of data indicates successful progress toward meeting program goals.
