Workforce Development: Internship Opportunities for Recruitment and
Retention of the Workforce

In the previous funding cycle, the Northwest Partnership assessed wages and benefits, training and education, and application of new practices among environmental health workers in the region. In completing this continuing initiative, the Partnership will evaluate and implement recommendations resulting from the assessment, including pilot testing a regional internship program. Outcomes will be shared with other partnerships to streamline and standardize the public health student internship curriculum.

Environmental Health Recruitment & Retention Study
The Environmental Health Recruitment & Retention Study, conducted in April and May 2007, targeted all environmental health supervisors and specialists currently employed in a county health department in North Carolina. According to the most current information available at the time of the survey*, local health departments in North Carolina employeed 887 Registered Sanitarians (RS) and RS Interns. Almost half (433) returned the survey.
To help with confidentiality, and increase response from health department staff, respondents were asked to identify their health directors' region (see map). The Northwest Partnership worked in collaboration with Western Carolina University to distribute teh survey and analyze results.
Below is a brochure containing the 2007 survey results on both a statewide and regional level (10). Please feel free to print and distribute information!
